Vanity came to the rescue in the form of a mini van full of photographers and a video camera. The van was recording the event, a chance for my 15 minutes of fame. I picked up the pace when I heard the clicking. The photo assistant was waving, big thumbs up as they drove ahead of me. All of my pain was gone, I felt great, I even tried to smile. In the last second as they pulled aside, I said “thank you” resulting in one last flurry of camera “clicks”. I admit it, it’s fun to feel like a rock star.

Unfortunately once the glory had passed I was faced with one last hill. In relation to the hills of the day so far this hill was tiny. It barely even appears on the race profile. More than anything, it was a hill at the end of a 40k journey which makes it by far the biggest hill of the race in my memory. I cursed, I rolled my eyes and thought about how sadistic the organizer of the event must be. Then it appeared, the end, the end of the freak’n race. The old border check point, a little building which was once the gateway to freedom was now my nirvana. I made it, I’m a cross country marathon runner!
